As of March 26, 2010 Joliet Technologies is no longer representing the Avtron line of products.

We do however represent the Dynapar line of Rotary Feedback Products.

Installing Avtron Encoders for Brake Motors

Avtron Encoders may be installed on brake motors with little difficulty. The first option is to use an M285 SMARTachTM with its 8.5″ FC flange mount and install it to the motor as shown in the picture. Since this unit has an 8.5″ FC flange on its outboard side, the brake can be mounted to the tach with its installation bolts going through the M285 and into the motor frame. Deflection of the motor shaft will occur when the brake is applied. With the M285 rotor attached to the motor shaft near the motor bearing, minimal deflection is seen by the rotor so there is no danger of exceeding the air gap between the rotor and sensor within the M285.

The second solution is to use a through shaft brake and mount an M3 Universal Encoder to the end of the shaft outboard of the brake. Since the encoder floats with the shaft, any deflection during braking will not affect encoder performance. Since the  M3 Universal Encoder mounts to the shaft, a stamped steel brake may be used since there is no need for a machined surface on the brake for an encoder. Avtron saves you money on the brake as well!

If you are working with motors that use band brakes, Avtron shaft tachs may be used to simplify the installation and alleviate alignment issues and expensive foot mount brackets. We can provide a custom stub shaft that mounts to the end of the motor shaft within the brake drum. The shaft would be made long enough to allow room for the encoder to mount with an anti-rotation bracket to hold it steady. An example of this is shown in the picture where an M685 SHAFTachTM is mounted minus the anti-rotation bracket which is installed when the motor is mounted on its base.
