Joliet Technologies latest Steel Slitting project, was completed in November at J.M. Steel just outside of Charleston, SC.
The Variable Speed DC Drive System is a heavy duty slitting line using a 300Hp Slitter motor and a 250Hp Recoiler motor, both run using 4 quadrant drives. The 4 quadrant drives were selected because of the regenerative capabilities. This allows for full control of acceleration and deceleration of the line speed, thus enhancing line speed tracking and controlled stops. For emergency stopping, the line is equipped with dynamic braking resistor circuitry.

The variable speed drives (VSD) used in this application featured the Siemens 6RA70 four quadrate regenerative models. Requirements included a two speed gearbox providing 250 & 750 F.P.M. line speeds with full loop, pull through, or slitter assist modes of operation. This line also features zero speed interlocking and full PC programmable operation.
Drive system consists of two 4 Quadrant DC digital drives with ratings of 510 ADC (Slitter), 430 ADC (Recoiler). Mounted and wired in a modified three door NEMA 12 enclosure.
